HOWLONG QUARRY

ABOUT HOWLONG QUARRY

LS Quarry operates the Howlong Sand Quarry, a site with more than 60 years of history supplying both construction and decorative materials to the local region.

Located on the flood plains of the Murray River, the quarry extracts and processes alluvial material to produce coarse sand and river pebbles in 7mm, 10/14mm, and 20mm sizes. Petrographic analysis has identified the pebbles as predominantly vein quartz and quartzite, with smaller amounts of hornfels and rhyolite.

In addition to their decorative appeal, these naturally water-worn pebbles are recognised for their hardness, strength, and durability, making them suitable for a wide range of landscaping and construction applications.

As mining standards have evolved over time, LS Quarry has committed to ongoing sustainability and rehabilitation initiatives at the site. As part of a legacy rehabilitation project, an older section of one of the pits is being restored, including the placement of up to 50 metres of fill material to help reduce water inrush during periods of peak river flow.
